AUS against. WI: With Matthew Short out of the third ODI due to injury, Ben McDermott joins the Australian team

Prior to the third One-Day International against the West Indies, Matthew Short had a lower-grade hamstring strain. As a result, Ben McDermott was called up to the Australian squad. In an attempt to preserve its lead in the series, Australia has made this last-minute change. Originally slated to bat for Queensland in the current Marsh Sheffield Shield match, McDermott was forced to depart midway through the play in order to go to Canberra for the next ODI.

After Travis Head left to recuperate during the first ODI at the MCG, Australia’s team is now without any more hitters. up a Sheffield Shield encounter over the weekend, McDermott turned up a fantastic effort for Queensland, scoring an undefeated 146 against Tasmania. On Monday, he is expected to go to Canberra to join the Australian team.

McDermott last played for Australia in an ODI during the March–April 2022 tour against Pakistan, where he also recorded his first-ever ODI century. In the post-World Cup T20I series in India, he did, however, demonstrate his abilities. Notably, he scored 54 off 36 balls in the Bengaluru final T20I.

Josh Hazlewood’s absence from Canberra due to his plans to remain in Sydney before resuming his T20I duties in Hobart ahead of Friday’s first T20I match against the West Indies completes the lineup adjustments.

After Short’s unexpected injury, the Australian selectors were eager to strengthen their batting order, which is why they included McDermott. Even though this ODI series has seen several lineup changes for Australia, they still have faith in their depth and ability to compete against a West Indies squad that, although capable of winning on occasion, does not have the constant hitting power to match Australia’s skill on the field.

Fans and commentators will be closely observing how these changes transpire and if the West Indies can take any advantage of the Australian team’s reorganization as the sides get ready for their next match. The timing of McDermott’s entrance is ideal, and his performance may be crucial to Australia’s series success going forward.
