The legendary flutist Rakesh Chaurasia, who won two awards at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards

Rakesh Chaurasia has established himself in the Indian classical music scene by mastering the Bansuri, a simple but very challenging bamboo flute to play. Ever since he received many nominations at the Global Music Awards, he has been the talk of the town. Three different categories saw nominations for his collaboration album As We Speak at the Grammy Awards: Best Contemporary Instrumental Album, Best Instrumental Composition, and Best Global Music Performance. Edgar Meyer, Rakesh Chaurasia, Bela Fleck, and Padma Vibhushan Zakir Hussain collaborated on the record. All three of them are multiple Grammy Award winners. The CD won two awards in the Best Global Music Performance and Best Contemporary Instrumental categories, despite stiff competition.

Rakesh Chaurasia told Mid Day, “There’s such a big world of learning here,” in reference to the dedication and hard work that went into creating this Grammy-winning record. You have complete freedom on stage when you belong to the classical genre. However, one must improve their knowledge of Western instruments and players while working with them. There was no dubbing done for this album. The whole album was captured in real time. It requires a lot of labor. In order to consider how we may become better every day, we need to practice a lot. Although I’ve completed a lot of tasks, it’s intriguing to attempt to figure out what is expected of me.

Childhood

The flute maestro Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia’s nephew and pupil is Rakesh Chaurasia. He has elevated the Chaurasia lineage to new heights and is regarded as the most talented of his uncle’s students.

An Unstoppable Global Career

The flutist has made several international tours, enthralling audiences in traditional and semi-classical performances in Europe, South Africa, Japan, Australia, and the US. Rakesh Charasia enjoys experimenting with his records, but he has never wavered from his ultimate objective of developing into a fully complete classical performer. He has given several performances at important festivals, including Festivals of India in Russia, Japan, the United States, and Europe, and WOMAD in Athens. Due to his increasing fame and stature, he has been invited to play solo at important international and Indian events, such as the Leicester International Music Festival in England and the Festival of Saint-Denis in Paris.

He has worked with a number of the most well-known names in Indian cinema. An further accolade for Rakesh Chairasia was his invitation to participate in a 24-hour live music broadcast on BBC, which was aired to a worldwide audience in honor of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth’s Silver Jubilee.

Honors and acknowledgement

He received the Indian Music Academy Award from Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, the Honorable President of India, in 2007.

He received the Aditya Birla Kalakiran Puraskar in 2008.

He was awarded the Guru Shishya Award in 2011.
