Zverev beats Medvedev at the Cincinnati Masters to go to the quarterfinals

On Thursday, Alexander Zverev defeated his seasoned foe to advance to the Cincinnati Masters quarterfinals, marking his first Top 10 victory of the year and breaking a four-match losing skid versus Daniil Medvedev.<img decoding=”async” class=”alignnone wp-image-131663″ src=”” alt=” zverev beats medvedev at the cincinnati masters to go to the quarterfinals download 2023 08 18t181650.081 11zon” width=”1246″ height=”700″ srcset=” 299w,×84.jpg 150w” sizes=”(max-width: 1246px) 100vw, 1246px” title=”Zverev beats Medvedev at the Cincinnati Masters to go to the quarterfinals 6″>

The German played with tremendous drive and consistency in the windy circumstances. In the following game, he broke Medvedev’s serve to overcome the World No. 3 Medvedev 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 in two hours and 34 minutes after saving both break chances he had at 4-4.

Zverev, who previously triumphed at the event on hard courts in 2021, has now won his last eight matches in Cincinnati.

“I faced a really challenging opponent in extremely challenging circumstances. He offers you nothing; you must win the match on your own. I accomplished it tonight, and I’m happy about it,” Zverev remarked.

“I tried to be patient, but you simply have to seize the opportunities that come your way. Since we were both serving very well, you won’t receive many. I’m happy to have finally won one tonight after losing three close matches earlier this year, he continued.

The World No. 3 had previously defeated the 16th seed in three matches at Indian Wells, Monte-Carlo, and Miami in 2023. The 26-year-old, though, would not be defeated once again, hitting 36 wins to raise their Lexus ATP Head2Head series record to 7-9.

Zverev will next compete with either Adrian Mannarino or Mackenzie McDonald as he pursues his second championship of the year and sixth overall in the Masters 1000. Earlier this year, in Hamburg, the German won the prize.
