Sunil Gavaskar predicts Shubman Gill to surpass Virat Kohli's historic IPL record, saying "It Can Happen"

In IPL 2023, Gujarat Titans opener Shubman Gill upped his performance, scoring a ton of runs to help the team get to a second consecutive final. With 851 runs, Gill has the most this season and is very certain to take home the Orange Cap.

Gill has three century in his past four games because to his incredible form. He is striking out at an impressive 156.43 percent, averaging a startling 60.79.

Faf du Plessis, the 24-year-old's main rival for the Orange Cap, saw his campaign come to an end as Royal Challengers Bangalore missed the playoffs.Devon Conway of the Chennai Super Kings is next on the list and technically still in the running, although he is 226 runs behind Gill.

With his present form, Gill may easily get another century and may even surpass Virat Kohli's historic mark of 973 runs, the most runs scored by a batsman in a single season.

In the IPL 2023 final, which will take place today in Ahmedabad when the reigning champions GT take on four-time champions CSK, Gill will need to hit 122 runs to beat Kohli, and there won't be a better place to do it.

Sunil Gavaskar, a batsman of legendary stature, believes that Kohli's record is firmly within the youngster's grasp.

“Yes, that is possible. It seems doable. Gill will have a great chance if Gujarat chooses to bat first. “122 will seem impossible if Chennai bats first and is all out for 180,” Gavaskar said.

Records are intended to be broken, however. And unlike Muttiah Muralitharan's 800 Test wickets or Sachin Tendulkar's run in Test cricket, this record won't be as tough to surpass. However, 122 runs are the main focus here. It is absolutely possible if Gujarat opens the batting, he said.

Jos Buttler of the Rajasthan Royals is second on the list of players with the most runs scored in a single IPL season. He set this record last year by scoring 863 runs in 17 innings.
